I have an opinion, made to be changed constantly, that I don’t like books about writing and movies about filmmaking and songs about songwriting— unless they’re really good. It always strikes me as a shortcut and why can’t you make something with some imagination? But then it turns out, I often appreciate a good shortcut and sometimes the book or movie is just too good to maintain my opinions (Trust! The Player! Sherman’s March!). Lucinella, by Lore Segal from 1976 is a primo exception to my opinion.Â
Lucinella is a novella about a writer. I read it years ago and it has one of my favorite lines that I think of all the time:
And it’s so funny, albeit in meta ways:
Who could have an opinion of jokes like these!
P.S. I wrote this Purse Book months ago, honestly, and then was in whoosh of deadlines, and then saw the Lore Segal passed away in early October. I love her books! Goodbye, good writer.
