Pity the poor gay novel I was trudging through when I picked up Renee Gladman’s newest book My Lesbian Novel, out today. In this project, an artist-writer named Renee Gladman attempts to write a lesbian novel, only interrupted by an interview dialogue on the nature (NAY, FAILINGS) of queer narrative.
It’s thrilling. It’s contains the ability to changes the way you read as you’re reading, to change how you think as you’re thinking—a moment that should be impossible to pinpoint, but you can sometimes, like feeling yourself change elevation when your ears suddenly: pop!!
My Lesbian Novel is philosophical and funny and optimistic and frustrated and needy because it desires a literature that doesn’t quite exist yet:
But don’t think this book is all dense clever queer theory. My Lesbian Novel manages to be lanky, there’s plenty of room to breathe. This book is really a paradox, a summary that allows me not to try to explain anymore, and instead of explaining I can just : gush!
EXTRA GOOD NEWS ALERT: Dorothy Project also releases a new edition of Renee Gladman’s 2008 project, TOAF, today. Not only is a slender-mind-bender Purse Book, but its new introduction contains a very good ode to slender books in general!
MIXED BAG time (notes on other culture & stuff that’s not Purse Books):
I just finished Danzy Senna’s new novel Colored Television which I could read forever, so effervescent and funny and just a little (8%? 12%?) mean.
I tried banana clips in my hair for the first time and unfortunately they’re a fantastic way to feel like your hair is flowing free but it’s contained so now I have to be reliant on another gadget.
Did you know that if you decide you want scrambled eggs after you’re already started to cook eggs, you can quickly mix the milk in in the pan and SCRAMBLE still ensues. Fun!
